Troubleshooting 6-Way Trailer Wiring Where Trailer Brakes Lock Up when Trailer is Plugged in
Question:
I pulled out my trailer harness and all the diagrams I can find have purple wires. My wire colors are: Brown Black White Yellow Green RED I tried using the diagram for the 7 way trailer plug but, when I hooked up to the trailer, the trailer brakes were locked up. When I unplugged the lights, it rolled free. What is the correct wiring pattern? please?

Expert Reply:
For your trailer with a 6-way there are actually two common ways the 6-ways can get wired up. The only difference is that the brake output circuit and the 12 volt circuit are swapped. Since your brakes are locked up currently all you need to do is swap those two circuits and the wiring should be correct.
What that means is swap the circuit in the 2:00 and center position. That will fix your problem. We see this issue pretty regularly and the solution is always just swapping the two circuits. You can do this by cutting both circuits and then just reconnecting them opposite.
