Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2010 Mazda CX-9
Question:
I have a 2010 Mazda CX-9 Sport, and i am looking to buy a trailer hitch receiver. E-trailer recommends a Class 2 receiver which makes sense as I only plan to tow a utility trailer for things such as camping gear and other small things. My only question is with a 1 1/4 inch receiver am I restrictiing myself to a small amount of choices for attachments such as bike racks and cargo racks which most of those require a 2 inch receiver or Class 3. Can I get a class 3 and keep in mind that my max capacity is 2000lbs but have more attachment options. I appreciate any advise you can offer. Thank you very much.

I recommend a Class lll trailer hitch like part # 75531 for your CX-9. A Class lll hitch offers many more options with a 2-inch receiver opening. Any time there is a choice between the 2 inch and th e1-1/4 inch we recommend the 2-inch for the very reason you mentioned.
Since you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
