Recommended 6-Pole Trailer End Wiring Plug Connector to Accept 12 Gauge Wire on Trailer
Question:
My trailer came with a molded 6-way cable that is 12/6 all 12-gauge. I had to replace the molded connector because of corrosion. I cut it off and tried to install a Hopkins 6-pin replacement. The Hopkins is meant for 14-gauge wires. I had to cut strands off of the 12-gauge wires but I dont really like how the wires fit in the connector. I understand that the electric brakes, auxiliary battery and ground cables should be at least 12 gauge so I dont want to go to all 14-gauge. I also dont really want to go to a 7-wire since my existing truck is already wired for 6. I guess I either need to go to 14/6 or replace the trailer with 7-wire. Are there any other options?

I would recommend you get the Pollak 6-pole # PK11604 for your trailer connector. This trailer end connector accepts up to 12 gauge wires.
You should not be trimming the 12 gauge wires to fit into a 14 gauge plug because the power draw will still be more than the plug is rated for and may limit the power or not work properly.
What you will want to do is snip off past where you stripped the wire and then wire up this Pollak connector # PK11604. This will be the best solution for you to not have to rewire your vehicle.
I have linked the Pollak Connector to this page for your purchasing convenience.
