Converting Wiring On 1998 Ford Ranger From 4-way To 7-Way For Trailer

Question:

How can I convert this so it works properly. I have a 1998 ford ranger and it has a 4-way round connector. I can easily rewire a flat connector being most converters I see have that. Will everything work properly? The trailer is a 1984 Mallard 18 ft with a 7-way connector. I do want the brakes and lights to work obviously and better yet I want everything to work. Whats the least expensive way to do this?

We have what you need to convert your wiring from 4-way to 7-way to match your trailer.

You can cut the round connector off on the vehicle side and replace it with part # HM48035. Then you need to use part # ETBC7. Your 4-way flat will plug into the # ETBC7 and you will need to run the additional wires.

You will need to attach the white wire from the # ETBC7 to a clean bare metal surface for a ground. The blue wire will go to your brake controller. The purple wire is used for reverse lights on your trailer if you have them. If not then you can just cap the wire and tuck out of the way. I have attached a drawing that shows how wiring needs to be run for a 7-way and a brake controller.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.

If you do not have a brake controller I recommend part # 90885. This is a our most popular brake controller because it is easy to install and operate.
