When installing the Curt trailer wiring harness # C59236 the red wire is for the brake lights. Your 1997 Lexus ES 300 has a separate wiring system. This means that the turn signals and brake lights are on different circuits/bulbs. The yellow wire is for left turn signal, green is for right turn signal, red is for brake lights. And of course brown is for running/tail lights and white is the ground.

There are some vehicles that would require grounding that red wire but not on your Lexus. But you will have to run the power wire from the black wire on the harness to the vehicle battery via the fuse holder and fuse which is included with # C59236.
