Recommended Trailer Hitch, Wiring, And Weight Distribution For 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Question:
I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 without the factory tow package. What can I use? What will my capacity be?

The towing capacity for your 2015 Grand Cherokee depends on how your vehicle is equipped. The difference in engine, transmission and suspension determine the towing capacity for your Jeep. I found the towing chart in the owner's manual and have attached it for reference. The towing capacity range for your vehicle is between 6,200-lbs and 7,400-lbs.
The trailer hitch I recommend is the Curt, part # C13182. This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2-inch receiver opening. No drilling is required when installing this trailer hitch but the tow hooks must be permanently removed due to the mounting locations for any hitch that fits your Jeep. This trailer hitch has a weight capacity of 5000-lbs but if a weight distribution system is used raises the capacity of the hitch to 7500-lbs.
You will need a ball mount and hitch ball. I recommend the etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
If you find you need weight distribution due to the weight of the trailer I recommend a system like the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System, part # EQ37100ET. This system is designed for tongue weight between 600 and 1000 lbs. This system also includes a 4-point sway control that helps keep the trailer in line when towing.
You will also need trailer wiring when towing a trailer. If the trailer has brakes you will also need to have the appropriate wiring and a brake controller.
All 2015 Grand Cherokees have a connector located under the vehicle near the back bumper. You would need part # HM40975 for that connector. This is the Pollak 7-way and 4-way connector.
The brake controller I recommend is the Prodigy P3, part # 90195. This is one of our most popular because it is easy to install and operate. To install the P3 you can use part # TK93VR. This plugs into the back of the brake controller and the other end plugs into the gray brake controller plug located under the dash near the top of the brake pedal.
After installing the trailer connector and the brake controller you will need to take your Jeep to the dealership to have the tow package turned on.
