Recommended Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier For Dodge Ram 2500 With Camper Installed
Question:
I am looking for a hitch cargo tray for my Dodge Ram 2500. Since my camper on top of my truck hangs over my truck bed by 1 foot horizontal, so does not hang down in the back, I like a cargo tray that is 4 foot wide and at least 5foot long. I cannot one that size. I wonder whether the option exists of folding down the side rails for easier loading. Another option I am looking for is a step for above camper. Yet I cannot drill anything into my camper described above. Since I have a winter package, the entrance it at least 1foot above the truck bed. Its an awkward situation. Any normal stair case on the bumper would be useless since way too low. Any staircase for the hitch available? Any other hint how to get easily into the camper for my 78 year old mom? The ladder is not the greatest means. Thank you,

You can take a quick measurement to determine the amount of clearance you need for a hitch mounted cargo carrier on your Ram 2500 with the Camper.
Just use a straight edge like a yardstick or dowel and place it vertically against the back of your camper letting it extend below the trailer hitch. Then measure form the center of the hitch pin hole to the straight edge. That is the amount of clearance you need for any hitch mounted accessory to clear your camper.
One of the larger cargo carriers we offer is the Flint Hill Goods 30x50 Cargo Carrier, part # FHG77ZR . Although you did not mention needing it for a wheelchair it can be used for other cargo and has a ramp that makes it easier to load and unload. This carrier measures 50" long x 30" wide x 6-1/2" tall. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the carrier is 14 inches when it is folded down. With the camper on the truck, it would be impossible to fold the carrier up, and I am confident that the ramp would interfere with your camper as well.
Since you do not want to do any drilling into the camper for a step, I have a couple of suggestions. Take a look at the Brophy RV and Camper Steps # RHS2. This step attaches into your hitch and may be just what you need.
You could also look at the and the Adjustable-Height, Folding Platform Step - Steel - 24" Long x 16" Wide - 300 lbs # S-150. This step has an adjustable height of 4 or 8 inches and it has a weight capacity of 300-lbs. The platform dimensions are 24 inches long and 16 inches wide. This step easily folds up for storage when not in use.
