Question:

I recently purchased a 2008 Jayco Jay Feather Sport travel trailer dry weight 3500lbs GVWR is 4500 tongue weight is 405 on trailer. My tow vehicle is a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 extended cab 4x4. I was wondering what weight rating you would recommend for my application? Thanks for your help.

The key number to consider when you're choosing a weight distribution system is the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer, which includes full propane tanks, water tanks, all gear and the weight of anything stowed in the bed of the tow vehicle behind the rear axle. I'll link you to an FAQ article that shows a few ways of determining the ready to tow tongue weight.

The Reese # RP65509 you looked at is rated for tongue weights ranging from 200-600 lbs, which is about perfect for what the likely tongue weight of your trailer is, between 400-500 lbs. However, I'll usually recommend folks with travel trailers use a weight distribution system with a sway control component. The tall, flat sides of travel trailers make them especially susceptible to trailer sway caused by crosswinds or turbulence from passing or oncoming traffic, which can lead to some very scary travel.

I'd recommend using the Fastway e2, part # FA94-00-0600. This system is rated for tongue weights ranging from 400-600 lbs, which should be perfect for your Jayco Fay Feather Sport. The e2 system also provides an effective sway control component that will work very well for you. The trailer ball is sold separately, as part # A-90 for a 2 inch ball or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball.

In short, the Fastway e2 does more, but it's about the same price as the # RP65509.
