Parts Needed for Flat Towing 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Question:
I have a StowMaster Tow Bar with a 2inch ball that folds up and stays on the front of the towed vehicle or it is removable. I had it on a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee and now need to put it on a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. What do I need for a base plate? Also, I have had this tow bar for about 10 years is there any issues I should be aware of because of its age?

If a tow bar like the Roadmaster StowMaster # RM-501 is properly maintained, kept clean and protected during storage periods then it could be perfectly fine. If the tow bar is 10 years old and has never been serviced then a rebuild kit may be in order. For the Stowmaster RM-501 the rebuild kit is part # RM-910003-20. We offer tow bar cover # RM-052-3 for the StowMaster.
For a compatible set of base plates I recommend Roadmaster's XL base plate kit # 1427-1. These work with the StowMaster tow bar and feature removable arms to keep the Grand Cherokee looking more like its usual self when you're not flat towing it.
Safe and legal flat towing also requires a number of other components including safety cables, a wiring/lighting kit and braking system for the GC, and often also a high/low hitch adapter and a wiring extension for easier hookup to the tow vehicle. Please refer to the linked article for more on flat towing items.
For safety cables use coiled set # RM-643. For a lighting/wiring solution you can use a simple magnetic light kit like # TL21RK or use a custom-fit plug-in harness like # HM56206. For a braking system I recommend the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR which is fully portable and wireless. It will slow the GC in direct proportion to the deceleration of the tow vehicle for less of that tug-of-war feeling.
For a high/low hitch adapter to keep your tow bar level (or at least within 3-inches of level) you can refer to the linked page to see items like # RM-048-8.
