Why Is Negative Battery Cable Removed to Flat Tow 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500
Question:
Do you have a work around to keep from removing the negative ground from the battery, during towing. There is no mention of removing fuses in the manual. Do you know why the battery needs too be disconnected? Dont want to reset all items in the pick-up every time I tow it. I read the GM Service Bulletin and it doesnt mention fuse pulling, only battery ground disconnect.

According to the owner's manual, 4x4 Silverado 1500 models with a 2 speed transfer case (Neutral and 4WD LOW) are the only Silverado models that can be flat towed.
The owner's manual doesn't directly address why the negative battery terminal needs to be removed, just that it does. In the GM Technical Service Bulletin 13-00-89-007 (you can Google it), it's specifically mentioned that failure to 'depower' the electrical system by removing the negative battery cable can damage the steering column, and that the damage wouldn't be covered by the warranty. Given this, I can't recommend any work-around that would contradict what's recommended in the owner's manual.
Using a # RM-766 battery quick disconnect would make things a bit easier, as you wouldn't physically need to disconnect the battery each time you're wanting to tow the vehicle. You'd simply flip a switch. You'll still need to reset your radio presets and clock, but the disconnect will make things a bit easier.
