Why Isn't Ultra-Fab 2 Inch Receiver for 5th Wheel Trailers Rated for Towing

Question:

Im looking to mount a hitch on the rear of a camper to attach hitch mounted accessories. I read the statement that this hitch isnt approved for towing and thats gotten me worried about using it. Id be using it for something like a tray or a bike rack. If this unit is properly installed, is there any reason to worry about using it for hitch mounted accessories so long as Im under the 350 lbs weight limit? Also, if its not to be used for towing, why does it have the holes to hook the tow chains to?

The primary reason that you're seeing the statement that the # UF35-946403 isn't recommended for towing is that we do not recommend towing one trailer behind another. Not only would the second trailer be pretty unstable, but it'd be extremely difficult to back the trailer. Finally, the frame structure at the rear of most trailers can handle up to a few hundred pounds of tongue weight (weight bearing downward on the hitch) but aren't suited to the pulling forces they'd be exposed to when pulling a trailer. We recommend consulting the trailer manufacturer to get the tongue weight capacity of the rear of the trailer before attempting to carry accessories in a hitch.

My Ultra Fab representative couldn't provide a reason for the safety chain holes. My guess is that the center section of the hitch is modular and could be used for other applications.
