Recommended 7-Way Trailer Connector For 2006 Toyota Tundra To Work With 7-Way On Trailer

Question:

Hi I have a 2006 Toyota Tundra. It is currently set up only with the 4-pole configuration. My small camping trailer has the round 7-pole. My question: What is the wire for that says connect to battery with fuse or breaker.?? If I connect that assuming all is well on the trailer side, will that connection charge the battery in my camper? Thanks,

If a 7-way connector is present on a trailer, it typically means the trailer has brakes. You can use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and a 12V battery to test the 7-way connector pins on the trailer to see what functions are active.

If you plan on using the brakes on the trailer you will need a couple of items. You will need a brake controller and a 7-way on your Tundra that will carry the signal form the brake controller to the brakes on the trailer.

If you do not plan on using the brakes on the trailer you can use a 7-way trailer connector like part # 37185. You would just plug the 4-way on your truck into the # 37185 and run the additional wires as needed.

The white ground wire will need to be attached to a clean bare metal surface on the truck. The black wire will run to the Tundra battery positive post. You will need an inline 40-amp circuit breaker like part # 9510. The blue wire is attached to the brake controller(is a brake controller is used. If not then it can be capped). The purple wire can also be used for an auxiliary power circuit if needed or it can be capped if not needed.

On the trailer side, you can check to see where the 12V power wire is run on the trailer. It can be run to the battery mounted on the trailer or it can sometimes be run to a junction box on the trailer. The 12V power wire on the Tundra 7-way will only provide a trickle charge and help maintain the battery on the trailer if the wire is connected to it. If the battery is dead on the trailer it will have to be charged with a charger like the NOCO Genius # 329-GENIUS5.

If you plan on using the brakes on the trailer you will need a brake controller. I recommend part # 90885. This is our most popular brake controller because it is easy to install and operate. I have attached a drawing that shows how a brake controller wiring is installed. I have also attached a link to some helpful articles about brake controllers and installation you can check out.
