Bike & Cargo Carrier Options for Use on Winnebago View 24V Class B+ RV

Question:

I have a Winnebago View 24V Class B+ RV and need to increase my cargo carrying ability and also occasionally carry our two bicycles. Is the Hollywood 2 bike rack and cargo carrier a better option than a ladder rack and bigger cargo carrier?

It is generally a better idea to use a hitch receiver to support a heavy load. Lightweight ladder-mount RV bike racks are available for up to 2 bikes, such as the Surco 2 Bike Carrier # SP501BR, but if you can use hitch-mount carriers that place the load on the vehicle frame you are better off.

Have a look at the safety sticker on your RV hitch. There should be a tongue weight capacity listed on it. This is important to know since that TW figure is the maximum weight load you can use on the hitch. If your TW rating is 300-lbs, for example, then the weight of the bike/cargo carriers you use, plus the weight of the bikes and cargo you load on them, all together cannot exceed that rated capacity.

Bike racks for use on RVs have to be specifically rated for that application, such as the Swagman Original 3, part # S64152-2. (I own this rack and I would buy it again if I had it to do over.)

f your hitch has a 500-lb TW rating I would recommend the 23 X 59 Stromberg Carlton carrier # CC-100. It is rated for rv applications with a 500 pound capacity. You could add the bike rack adapter # CC-125 that lets you carry 2 bikes on the platform and would be good to go. It really comes down to hitch capacity.

If your bikes are within the 35-lbs-per-bike limit of the Surco ladder rack then going that route frees up your hitch to do the heavy work of handling most of your cargo.

Please feel free to let me know your hitch TW rating and your expected cargo weight and I will be glad to work with you to find the best solution that fits your preferences and budget. The linked article on RV bike racks may be of interest too.
