Replacement 5th Wheel Pin Box to Provide More Turning Clearance

Question:

Im curious if the king pin hitches can come in different lengths. My current hitch on my 5th wheel does not leave me any room with my new truck and the tailgate down to maneuver at all. If I am not straight in line with the trailer when backing up my tailgate will hit the camper before my hitch mates with the king pin. I was wondering if getting a longer hitch assembly would be an option or if these need to remain the dimensions of the original size for the camper. Thank-you.

5th wheel pin boxes do come in different lengths. In some cases substituting a longer pin box can provide more clearance but affect a trailer's frame warranty since extending a pin box increases the amount of leverage applied to the frame. We suggest checking with your trailer manufacturer (you'll need the trailer's VIN when you call) to get their take on the idea of changing out pin boxes on your particular trailer.

The linked article on pin boxes may be helpful since it illustrates how to measure your pin box to see if alternate designs are available to bolt up in its place.

It is not recommended to tow with your tailgate down. We offer replacement 5th wheel tailgates like # VG-97-4000 and # VG-97-100 that provide more clearance for the pin box but still let you keep items in the bed secured.
