5th Wheel Toy Hauler Trailer Tire Size Compatibility
Question:
Hi, 2006 tahoe transport 39 ft 3 axle, on the tag on the trailer tire size says 235 75 r16 I purchased the rig 6 years ago. It has 225 75 r 15s on it currently, Going to get new tires it seems a bit tight when I put the tire covers on at the top of the tire. So not sure if i should go back to the 16 someone changed it for a reason, any Suggestions? Thanks very much.

I reviewed photos of the 2006 Tahoe TranSport 5th wheel toy hauler and the wheel wells on this triple axle trailer do not appear to offer much in the way of extra space. Of course, I cannot know what tire sizes are installed on the trailers in these photos, but just the same it appears to be a pretty tight fit in those wheel wells.
The overall diameter of a ST235/75-16 trailer tire is just under 30-inches (29.87-inches to be exact). The diameter of a ST225/75-15 tire is smaller, at 28.4-inches. If this smaller size that you have on the trailer now is giving you clearance concerns when you install tire covers then a larger tire (the ST235/75R16) may only make the problem worse.
As long as the wheels and tires you use have the necessary load capacity for the trailer's rated weight, you can certainly change to a different size, provided that there are no clearance issues.
I suggest checking with the trailer maker using its VIN to find out their take on alternate tire sizes on this particular trailer.
For reference I have linked our main page for tire covers. If you click on the overall diameter you need (30-inch for ST235/75-16 and 29-inch for ST225/75-15 ) you can see all tire covers. You can sort these by color and brand using the filters on the page.
