Recommended Brake Controller And Wiring For 2005 Subaru Outback Wagon
Question:
The information about TK63VR says it works on electric brakes only. There are electric and electric over hydraulic brakes. Does TK63VR work on both? Also can you tell me if the brake signal can be found in another location than under the dash. I think I saw one of your videos that showed using the red wire back on the 4 pole plug convertor. Is that correct?

The Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN Trailer Brake Controller, part # TK63VR is designed for electric only brakes. It will not work with electric over hydraulic brakes.
We do offer brake controllers like part # 90885 that can be used with both brake systems.
When wiring the brake controller, the red wire needs to be attached to a wire that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed. Typically, this is the cold side of the brake light switch, found under the dash at the top of the brake pedal. You can use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and test the wiring while someone presses the brake pedal.
If you have no trailer wiring I recommend first a 4-way harness like part # 118461.
I have attached a couple drawings that show how trailer wiring should be ran and also how to run the wiring for a brake controller. Just plug the harness into the connection point located in the rear cargo area behind the driver side tail light.
You will need a 7-way connector on your trailer and a 7-way connector on the back of your Subaru. You would not be able to connect the brake controller to a 4-way connector. There is no dedicated brake only circuit on a 4-way. The brake signal and the turn signal are sent along the same wire. Typically yellow for left turn and brake and green for right turn and brake.
You will need part # ETBC7. This plugs into your 4-way connector and with additional wiring will give you a working 4-way and 7-way connector at the rear of your Outback. I have attached a drawing that shows how the wiring is ran when installing a brake controller.
I have also attached a couple helpful articles that explains trailer wiring and brake controller wiring.
