What to Consider When Replacing a 3,000 Pound Single Axle Trailers Leaf Springs

Question:

I have 2007 TWF single axle trailer rated for 3,000lbs. Would using leaf springs rated for 3,500lbs work or will that cause other problems? Are there any common unforeseen/overlooked problems when replacing the leaf springs that I should be prepared for? Should I order anything other than the leaf springs and u bolts?

If you use a higher rated leaf springs on a lower rated trailer they will work but will cause stiffness in your ride quality. This is due to the trailer not being under the heavier weight therefore less flex of the springs, using a higher rated spring will not increase the capacity of the trailer because the trailer itself cannot support more than the stated 3,000lbs of weight.

When replacing leaf springs you will want a new u-bolt kit like # APUBR-1, the correct shackle bolt like # 166081, and possibly nylon bushing like # TRBU11566 depending on the diameter size bolt you currently have and the size provided on the leaf spring you purchase.

It is also very important to match what is currently on your trailer so that they will fit properly. I recommend taking measurements and have those line up, and to not just go by weight rating. The # SP-210275 leaf spring you were looking at measures 27 inches long and 1-3/4 inches wide with an eye diameter of 9/16 of an inch. You will also want to make sure that you replace leaf springs in pairs to ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance.
