Brake Controller Recommendation/Troubleshooting on 2002 GMC Yukon

Question:

Part Numbers: 5504,3025-P Will this unit with the added wiring harness plug and play into a 2002 GMC Yukon with the standard 7 way plug ? I have a 5504 unit , but it is hardwired into the existing harness . The unit I have is intermittent and only works once awhile. This unit of mine has been used on two vehicles and is more than 10 years old. It has worked great until now and I would like to replace it with the same type unit.

The Draw-Tite # 5504 Activator and the # 3025-P vehicle specific brake controller wiring adapter would work just fine on your 2002 Yukon. You'd simply unplug the existing controller from the junction box located on the firewall behind the emergency brake pedal.

You might want to do some troubleshooting before replacing the controller, to ensure the problem isn't in the vehicle or trailer wiring, and not the brake controller itself. Use a # PTW2993 circuit tester on the black wire exiting the rear of the controller. You should see constant voltage on that wire. The blue wire should show voltage if the brake pedal or the manual brake switch on the controller is activated. The red wire should show voltage when the brake pedal is pressed.

If all that checks out okay, closely examine the trailer connector on both the vehicle and the trailer, ensuring that there's no damage or corrosion. If you see white or green corrosion in the connectors, there's a chance the corrosion has spread to the interior of the connector and is interrupted the brake output signal from getting through. Clean/repair/replace as needed.

Have you ever used a proportional controller? Draw-Tite recently came out with the Brake EVN # TK63VR. The controller is at a very attractive price point, with the safer and more predictable braking that a proportional controller provides. The controller also has built-in diagnostics that will display an error code if there's a problem. This makes for much easier troubleshooting that the Activator # 5100.
