Brake Controller Installation-2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ Factory 7-Way Trailer Connector
Question:
I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee that is equip with a tow package 7 pin connection at the hitch. I need to purchase a break controller and I am looking for a clean and easy installation. I was hopeful that there is a plug-in wiring adapter for my specific vehicle. Do you know if there is one for my vehicle? If so, can you please provide me with the part number?

When Jeep installed the factory 7-way on the third generation Grand Cherokee, they ran the brake output circuit from the 7-way under the vehicle and into the passenger cabin below the dash. The output wire is either light green or blue in color and should be bundled up by the emergency brake. The wire should have a tag or sticker that says, 'trailer brake.' There isn't a plug-in wiring adapter available, the remaining connections would need to be hardwired using our brake controller installation kit, part # 5506.
The brake controller would install under the dash within easy reach of the driver, preferably to the right of the steering column. The controller's blue wire would connect to the light green or blue wire you found under the dash. The black wire would run through the firewall to the positive battery terminal, via the 30-amp circuit breaker included in the kit. The white controller wire would connect to the negative battery terminal. The red brake controller wire connects to the brake stop lamp switch located at the top of the brake pedal. There could be several different wires exiting the switch, you'll want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to locate the wire that only shows power when the brake pedal is pressed (should be a white/tan wire). When you locate the wire, tap the red brake controller wire into it using a quick-splice connector, part # SWC502905-1.
For a brake controller, I'd recommend going with a proportional model for the safest, most predictable braking. The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 is a top seller that'd I'd highly recommend.
