How Does a Brake Controller Wire to a 2001 Dodge 1500 Conversion Van

Question:

i have a 2001 ram 1500 conversion van with factory tow harness but i am having difficulty locating factory plug . i have already aquired proper brake contoller and harness adapter from u guys. is it possible i have a factory tow harness without plug ready for brake controller. when i say factory tow harness , there was a tow harness with plug ends that i was able to get a plug set from et that had 7-way 4-way and capped plug for trailer plug so i was assuming the other end of harness front end would have plug ready, but i cant find it - help!

The 2001 Dodge Vans like your 1500 do not have a brake controller install port under the dash. You will have to hardwire the controller to your vehicle that has a 7-way already.

for a wiring kit to install the brake controller and the 7-way adapter you would want the Wiring Kit For 2 and 4 Brake Electric Brake Controllers # 5506. This will provide the power source and ground for the wiring for the brake controller. You will need to test the wires from the brake pedal switch of your vehicle to find a circuit that has voltage when the brakes are applied and none when not applied. This will be the circuit you will run the red wire to.

Finally you will need to run a length of 10 gauge wire (part # 10-1-1) from the brake output circuit of the controller to the brake output circuit of the 7-way (blue wire). The # 10-1-1 is sold by the foot so you will need to order a quantity of the amount of feet you will need.

I attached an FAQ on installing brake controllers for you to check out.
