Trailer Wiring and Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2006 Jeep Commander

Question:

Hello, I have an 06 jeep commander with a 4.7 liter v8 engine . Im a complete camping novice, never done it. Im interested in towing a 19 foot , 3,089 lb camper, thats the dry weight. Not planning on weighing it down with water, cargo , etc. Should my jeep be able to tow this camper without damage to the car? Thank you for any assistance you can give me. Even a point in the right direction as to who I might should speak with about this would be great. I have just a ball hitch on the jeep right now.

I did some research on your 2006 Jeep Commander and it looks like when properly equipped it has a towing capacity of 6,500 lbs. So you should be just fine. You will want to consult your owners manual though just to be certain though.

If you do not have trailer wiring on the vehicle you would need the part # 118408 to provide a 4-way.

If the trailer has brakes then you would want to install a brake controller to allow you to actuate them and assist in the braking of the set up.

From there you would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will want the Brake Controller Install Kit and 7-Way Adapter part # ETBC7. I attached installation instructions and an install video for this product as well.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup.

I attached some install videos for you to check out as well.
