Brake Controller Installation on 2014 Ford F150 w/ Factory 4-Pole Trailer Connector
Question:
I have a ford F-150 with a 7 pin adapter. I am purchasing a trailer to haul ATVs and it has electric brakes. Do I need an electric brake controller or will the 7 pin adapter automatically operate the trailer brakes?

Expert Reply:
If your trailer has electric brakes, and you want them to actuate, you'll need a brake controller.
A proportional controller like the Tekonsha Primus # TK90160 would be an excellent choice. A proportional controller will sense how quickly the tow vehicle is braking and will send the proper amount of voltage to the trailer brakes so that the trailer and the tow vehicle stop at the same rate. The
The brake controller would plug into the connector using the # 22292 brake controller wiring adapter. If you're using an adapter like # 37185 to convert the factory 4 pole into a 7-way, the blue wire on the adapter would connect to the blue wire on the driver's side frame rail. Follow the wiring from the 4 pole to the frame rail, follow it to the connector. On the other side of the connector, you'll find the blue wire if you peel back some of the wire loom.
