Why Does Curt Hitch, # C12108, Need A Stabilizing Strap For Non-Trailer Loads On 2010 Toyota RAV4
Question:
I want to purchase the Curt model C12108 for my RAV4 2010. I will mainly carry bikes on the hitch. I saw this warning on your site All non-trailer loads bike racks, cargo carriers, etc must be supported by stabilizing straps per Curt warranty requirements. Is Curt hitch not strong enough for bike rack and are other brand better for my purpose ? I saw that the tongue weight is higher than Draw-Tite 350 vs 300 pounds. I was surprise to read this warning, do you have any explanation? Thank you.

The Class III 2 inch hitches for your 2010 Toyota RAV4 are rated for 350 lbs. tongue weight. The Class II 1-1/4 inch hitches for your vehicle are rated for 300 lbs. tongue weight.
The Curt Trailer Hitch, # C12108, is a Class II 1-1/4 inch hitch that has the higher 350 lbs. tongue weight like a Class III hitch. It is strong enough to carry a bike rack, but because the Curt hitch has it rated with the higher tongue weight capacity on a 1-1/4 inch hitch they will recommend to use the Curt Bike Rack Strap, # 18050.
This strap will attach to the bike rack and the other end to the vehicles trunk lip or window. It gives added support and stability to the bike rack and keeps the movement of the bike rack to a minimum, which puts less stress on the hitch. This allows them to recommend the higher tongue weight rating on a Class II 1-1/4 inch hitch.
If you do not we98864. This will give you a more common 2-inch size hitch and also the 525 lbs. tongue weight capacity.
