Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 2012 GMC Sierra Towing a 2016 Shasta Oasis 18BH
Question:
Hi, I have a 2012 GMC Sierra and will be purchasing a 2016 Shasta Oasis 18 BH next week. Will I require both the weight distribution and sway or could I get away with just a sway bar install? GVWR is around 3800lbs for the trailer. No issues for towing with the GMC, but dont want to spend the extra $ if I dont have to from a weight distribution perspective

The general rule with weight distribution is that if the gross trailer weight is at least 50 percent of the vehicle weight then weight distribution is recommended. Or if the vehicle sags with the trailer connected or sway is an issue then it is also recommended.
Weight distribution is a good investment though and it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. For example, Pro Series system # PS49901 is rated for up to 550 pounds tongue weight and comes with sway control and a good price. Considering the advantages of having weight distribution and sway control it is hard to pass that up.
Another option that will be easier to fit the frame of your Shasta Oasis and that still provides built-in sway control take a look at the Fastway e2 system, # FA94-00-0600, from Equal-I-zer. With this system you won't have to disengage the sway control to back up like you would with the Pro Series system. You would just need to add a ball to this system, # EQ91-00-6100, which is a 2-5/16 inch ball.
I have included some links on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you as well.
