Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport Behind an RV

Question:

I am leaning towards the RoadMaster Sterling All Terrain Tow Bar with Electric Cord - 8,000 lbs. It looks like my base plate choices are only the EZ4 or EZ5.....what are the differences and which is preferred? I would also like to know which wiring system is best and what else do I need.

To flat tow your 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport you will need base plates, tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking.

Starting with the base plates if the Jeep has the regular factory bumper and no front mount winch or brush guard I recommend Blue Ox base plates # BX1126. Our installers have said the Blue Ox base plates are easier to install compared to Roadmaster. Please note if your Jeep does have an aftermarket bumper or accessories let me know the details of those parts and I can make other recommendations.

If you want to go with Roadmaster then I recommend # RM-521448-4 which is the EZ4 kit. The difference between it and the EZ5 is the removable arm styles. The EZ4 have a flat face where the tow bar attaches. The EZ5 are more like the Blue Ox base plates. Again these are for Jeep models with the standard factory bumper.

For a compatible tow bar for the Blue Ox base plates I recommend the Alpha, # BX7380. It is rated for 6,500 pounds and comes with safety cables so you will not have to purchase any safety cables separately. I have linked videos on the base plates and tow bar for you.

For the Roadmaster base plates I recommend the Falcon 2, # RM-520, rated for 6,000 pounds. It does not include safety cables so you would need to add some, # RM-643.

For lighting you have some options (see link) but I recommend 4-diode kit # RM-15267 because once it is installed you will not have to worry about it again. I have included a link to a video showing diode installation on a Jeep.

You may also need a high/low adapter to keep the tow bar level. I have linked a help article showing how to measure and a link to the high/low adapters we carry.

And finally, most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the preferred systems for our installers and what I recommend is the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO proportional system, # SM99251. It will apply the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.

Be sure to consult your vehicle owners manual for specific information on flat towing the vehicle. I have also included some helpful links to our series of help articles on flat towing for you.
