Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a 2016 R-Pod Model 179 Travel Trailer

Question:

Greetings, I have a 2012 Chevrolet Colorado, I5 engine, 4X4 Crew cab truck with the trailer towing package5,500 towing capacity. I will soon take delivery of a 2016 RPOD Model 179 that weighs 2600 pounds empty and I m looking to install a weight distribution hitch. Im looking at the E2 but am confused about when it says a minimum 400 pound tong weight. The tong weight on the new trailer is 285 but Im sure will increase some when loaded? But to 400 pounds? What would you recommend in my situation? Regards

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

If the dry tongue weight on your trailer is 285 lbs I have a great solution for you, but the part # FA94-00-1000 would not be it. This system is rated too high for this trailer and would give you a pretty harsh ride.

Instead I would recommend the Reese Weight Distribution System part # RP66540. This system has a tongue weight range of 200-600 lbs which would be perfect for your trailer. It also uses trunnion spring bars which offer better ground clearance than round bars.

For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.
