Fitment and Compatibility for Upgrading Tires 230/80-16 on 12,500lbs Trailer
Question:
I have 230x80x16 LR E on aluminum wheels. I would like to upgrade to a load range F or G. I have dual 5200# Dexter axles and have never scaled over 8500# on the combined trailer axles. The 5th wheel trailer GVW is 12,500#. Weight ratings are no issue. I have seen differing opinions on max air pressure. Some say as long as the valve stems are threaded steel and not the rubber push-in style, that the wheels will take any pressure of a 16inch tire. I have 6 lug wheels. What say you?

The Taskmaster # TTWPRG235R16 tire is the closest tire to the 230/80-16 I have for you in Load Range G.
If your trailer can accommodate the additional height of 1-1/4 inch increase and 5 mm width increase then this tire will work great for you.
This tire's max psi carrying capacity is 4,400lbs at 110 psi. Special trailer tires should be inflated to their maximum air pressure. The value for the maximum air pressure should be listed along with the value for the maximum load on the tire's sidewall. These values will usually designate the maximum load at a maximum psi. At the maximum air pressure, the tires will perform and wear best, and get the best gas mileage.
If a trailer tire is inflated to a lower air pressure than the maximum, the amount of weight that the tire can carry will be reduced. If a heavier load is put on the trailer tire than what is recommended for that air pressure, the sidewall of the tire could heat up and cause the tire to fail.
If a tire is over-inflated, it will wear more in the center of the tread, all the way around the tire. If a tire is under-inflated, it will wear on the outside edges of the tread, all the way around the tire.
In addition to the tire pressure being important your valve also will have a max capacity. This will be important for them to be compatible to work properly with your tire and wheel. Our metal Americana # AM20906 is rated for over 100psi, while the rubber one, that fits the same rim hole diameter, # AM20907 is only rated for up to 100psi.
I have linked a Help Article on tires and all the parts mentioned above for your convenience.
