Does this also hold the tailgate in position during transport?

Typically, a tail gate on a trailer will have a pin that holds the tail gate in place when it is raised for transporting. I would not rely on the Gorilla-Lift Utility Trailer Tailgate Lift Assist, part # GL1 for the only support when towing.

if you need a latch to hold the tail gate in position I recommend a latch like part # SL716 or part # SL716SS.
