Troubleshooting Trailer Brake Controller Install Where Brake Output Circuit Always Has Voltage

Question:

Hi, I am getting a constant voltage on the blue wire. My wiring is correct- Black to battery White to Ground Red to brake light and blue to trailer connector.. I just ordered a second one of these hoping that the first one I purchased was just bad, but I am getting the same results. When I activate the manual slide it does turn on the brake lights? is it supposed to do that as well? Thanks for your help Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controller #9030 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with factory towing package installed

The problem is most likely that the red wire of the controller isn't connected to the correct circuit. It will need to be connected to a circuit that sees voltage only when the brake are applied and none when released.

The other possible scenario is that the 12 volt circuit of the 7-way is somehow shorting out to the brake output circuit. You can test this by unplugging the brake controller and if the output circuit still has voltage on it then the voltage is coming from the 12 volt accessory circuit.

The vehicle brake lights illuminating with the override lever is normal. This is a safety feature that is designed to allow vehicles behind you to know that you are slowing the trailer down.
