The aftermarket brake controller that I recommend is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller # 90885. The Prodigy P2 is a proportional brake controller and one of our most popular brake controllers. I like to recommend this controller because of the easy to read, digital LED display used for communication, rather than simply a single LED light. The controller has integrated safeguards to protect your vehicle, trailer, and connector, such as minimizing the drain on the vehicle battery, preventing the trailer brakes from overheating, and defending the controller and breakaway system from shorts. Continuous diagnostics are checked by the controller to alert you to any potential problems. I have attached a review video of this brake controller for you.

You can install this brake controller easily with the Tekonsha Plug-in Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers for Dodge # 3021-P. I spoke with my contact at Tekonsha and he confirmed that this will work for your truck. He said that their harness will install in place of the factory brake controller harness. I have attached a photo of the vehicle end of the harness so you can ensure that it will match up to the plug in your truck.

To install an aftermarket brake control you will have to disconnect the 4-wire plug from the integrated trailer brake module (ITBM). This will turn on a warning lamp on the instrument cluster. In order to disconnect the ITBM and not get the warning lamp, your local Dodge dealer will have to reconfigure the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), of the truck. Once the TIPM has been reconfigured, and the ITBM has been unplugged, you can install an aftermarket brake controller. I have attached a help article on installing a brake controller in a Dodge/Ram that has an integrated brake controller for you.
