Converting Swing Open Trailer Door to a Ramp Door to Load a Motorcycle

Question:

I am looking at converting a small enclosed trailer which currently has a swing door to a ramp door to make it easier to load my motorcycle. I know I will have to beef up the inside of the door for the increased weight. The door is 48inch wide. I think this spring would help with the closing of the door. Is that correct? Also, which other items would you suggest for the conversion?

Trailer ramp spring # 362SW61 could work provided that the interior of the trailer is wide enough for the rod (the rod can be trimmed down as low as 48 inches). The capacity of this spring is 120 pounds so it will help when both raising and lowering the door.

You really would not need additional parts other than bolts to mount it in the trailer. To strengthen the door without adding to much weight you could use aluminum beams if you can find some locally or online.

For the door itself you will need the right kind of hinge such as # SH300. This is 3 inch wide stainless steel so corrosion will not be an issue. This hinge can also be trimmed to the length needed.

I also recommend some type of retention device for the door when it is up such as # 383200 which can be used horizontally or vertically. You just need to supply your own pipe.
