Why is There Dual and Single Wheel Capacity Listed for Taskmaster ST235/80R16 Trailer Tire

Question:

Hello. My question pertains to the Dual Tire Maximum Load Range. Can you please clarify. Is this referring to a DRW Application on one side of the axle? Or is applicable to a fifth wheel with tandem axle configuration with one tire on each end of the axle, i.e. 4 tires total? Concerning the latter question, using the 4 tire configuration, should the single or dual tire weights apply? I thank you in advance for your time.

The difference between the two tire weight ratings for the part # TTWTRTM2358016E is for a setup that has a dually style axle where there is 2 wheels per side of axle for a total of 4 wheels per axle.

I spoke with our local tire guru here at etrailer and he offered the following explanation for the difference in tire capacity when a tire is used as a dually or single wheel setup:

The load on each tire in a dual tire system is never the same. Tires can be worn differently, if wear is different the overall diameter will be different and the larger tire will carry more load. Also the inner tire can be more loaded than the outer because of the crown in the road. The loads shared by the dual tires are different from each other.

Because of that they put a lower rating (usually 5 to 10 percent less) on the tires when used in a dually setup.
