How to Hook Up Remaining Wires On Wiring Adapter, # 37185, And # 30717, On a 2001 Ford F150
Question:
I have a 2001 Ford F-150. I need to convert my 4 pole to a 7 pole for a pop-up camper. I only need to use it to run the lights while trailering. Im guessing I have to hook up the white wire for ground, but do I need to hook up the other wires or can they just be taped up out of the way? Wiring part # 37185 or part # 30717

On your 2001 Ford F-150 with a 4 pole trailer connector you can use either one of the wiring adapters, the Hopkins Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole and 4 Pole, # 37185, or the Tow Ready Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole and 4 Pole, # 30717. These adapters will give you a 4 pole and a 7 pole connector on the back of your vehicle.
The white wire (ground) definitely needs to be hooked up for your vehicle to power the lights on the trailer. You need to make sure the ground is mounted to a clean metal surface for a good connection.
The extra wires do not need to be hooked up if you do not have brakes or a battery to be charged while towing. Usually the extra black wire is for charging the trailer battery, the blue wire is for brakes and the yellow/purple wire is for auxiliary power. You do not need to hook these wires up if your trailer does not require these functions.
