Ball Mount for a 2014 Toyota RAV4 to Tow a Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer Level
Question:
I have a Toyota Rav 4 2014 and plan to tow a Rack and Roll Trailer. The trailer requires a height of 22inch from the ground to the top of the hitch ball. The distance from the ground to the top of the receiver hole on the RAV4 is 12 and 1/8 inches, so I need a ball mount to top of hitch ball rise of 9 and 7/8. Since I am towing kayaks, I really only need a class I ball mount. Do you have a ball mount and hitch ball combination that meets these specifications. Thanks for your assistance.

The ball mount that you use is going to depend on the trailer hitch you have on your 2014 Toyota RAV4. If it has a 2 inch receiver opening then it will not be a problem. But if it is a 1-1/4 inch opening that makes it a Class I or II hitch and you are supposed to use a specific ball mount indicated by the hitch manufacturer.
Since Yakima is measuring that 22 inches to the top of the ball and all of the ball mounts are based on measuring to the bottom of the coupler instead you would actually only need about a 7-1/4 inch rise. Ball mount # 4283 for 2 inch hitches is closest with a 7 inch rise.
If you have a 1-1/4 inch hitch and the recommended ball mount is not going to work then the most rise we have for a 1-1/4 inch ball mount is # C45028 at 5-3/8 inches. But none of the 2 inch balls for this ball mount, such as # 19258, have a rise.
Another option for a 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch is to use adapter # HT5R which offers 5 inches of rise, and a ball mount that offers the other 2 inches of rise such as # 3593 which has a rise of 2-1/8 inches, with a regular ball # 19258. Please note that the use of the adapter reduces the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. However since you are towing a Yakima Rack and Roll trailer, the tongue weight will be very low and it will not be an issue.
