Can I Use A Hitch Extension w/ Curt Trailer Hitch # C13095 On a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder
Question:
can i work around the spare tire carrier.it hangs out quite a bit. need extension

Expert Reply:
When using a hitch extension it will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the Curt Trailer Hitch, # C13095, by 50 percent. The tongue weight capacity of that hitch is 500 lbs, so if you use a hitch extension it will be reduced to 250 lbs.
So you will not want to use a hitch extension when towing a trailer. For towing you could use a extended ball mount like the Ball Mount Kit, # EBMK2EL. This will extend the hitch ball 11-1/4 inches from the hitch pin hole and you will not lose the weight capacity like with a hitch extender.
If you are wanting to use the hitch for a hitch bike rack or hitch cargo carrier then you would not need the extension.
The hitch bike racks and hitch cargo carriers are designed to set back from the back of your vehicle. They will have a measurement listed that is from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest upright bar.
After the hitch is installed you can measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the farthest part back of your vehicle, which would be the back of your spare tire carrier. Then, take that measurement and find the bike rack or cargo carrier that lists a measurement longer than the measurement you got.
