Hitch Adapter to Allow Use of Yakima RidgeBack 4 Bike 2-Inch Rack in 1-1/4-Inch Class II Hitch
Question:
Hello, I have a Volkswagen Tiguan 2016 and recently had my received hitch installed and need a 1.5 to 2 inch adaptor. I have a Yakima RidgeBack 4 Hitch Rack - 4 Bike. Do I need Hitch Adapter 1-1/4inch to 2inch Trailer Hitch Receiver with 5inch Rise or would a basic Hitch Adapter be just fine for floor clearance. I want to prior to purchase to save the time and avoid unnecessary problem.

It is possible to use a hitch adapter like # HT5R from Brophy to allow installation of a 2-inch hitch bike rack such as the Yakima RidgeBack 4 # Y02458 in a smaller 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch. This adapter's 5-inches of rise will give you better clearance if you have a steep driveway entrance or if you just want the peace of mind of knowing you don't have to worry about the bike tires touching the ground.
There are two drawbacks to doing this: using any adapter will cut your hitch's capacity by 50-percent. So if you have a 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch like the Draw-Tite # 36474 its 300-lb rating drops to 150-lbs if used with an adapter. This means that the combined total of the 35-lb RidgeBack plus your four bikes' weight cannot exceed 150-lbs. Using an adapter also tends to introduce potential for more random motion of the carrier while you drive. Its a good idea to check the safety sticker on your hitch to confirm its capacity before installing the rack.
If you have a steep driveway or bikes with very large diameter wheels then you may need the extra ground clearance provided by the Brophy adapter. Extra ground clearance is never a bad thing. And if you care to lock the adapter in your hitch you can use # e98880 that we offer. If you'd like to reduce the motion of the carrier you might consider a ratcheting strap like # EM34415 from Erickson.
