Expert Reply:
The SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System, part # SM99251 is a vacuum-assisted supplemental braking system and will engage the brakes on your Malibu with the same intensity as the braking action of your towing vehicle. I have attached a link to an installation video of this system on a 2010 Malibu you can check out.
I also recommend using a stop light switch like part # RM-751210-1. This wires into the Malibu fuse box and activates the brake-monitoring system whenever the brake pedal is applied in the towed vehicle.
There are 5 items needed when you are flat-towing a vehicle. You will need base plates for your Malibu, a tow bar, safety cables, lighting for your Malibu and a supplemental brake system.
The base plates I recommend for your Malibu is the Roadmaster EZ Base Plate Kit, part # 523145-5. For a tow bar I recommend part # RM-520.
For safety cables I recommend part # RM-643, and for lighting I recommend part # RM-154.
I have attached some links to some videos and to some helpful articles you can check out.
