Transmission Cooler Recommendation For 2013 Ford F-150
Question:
Ive got a 2013 F-150 XLT with the 5.0L, 3.31 gears, and no tow package. I didnt plan on towing but it looks like Ill need to do a one time haul of a 6,500 lb trailer about 2000 miles. What transmission cooler would you recommend? Does it come with fittings for installation into my stock setup? Also, are there any other items I should consider to help me get through this one time haul? Thanks

When it comes to transmission coolers, you will want to use the largest cooler that will fit in the space in front of the radiator. Of the three styles of transmission coolers, stacked plate coolers are the most efficient.
If you have the room, I recommend a cooler like the Derale Stacked-Plate Transmission Cooler # D13402. This cooler measures 13 inches wide x 6-7/16 inches tall x 2 inches deep. Included in the kit is the necessary hardware to install the cooler. Though it will also depend on the towing conditions, the Derale # D13402 cooler will be sufficient for your 2013 Ford F-150. If you are towing through cooler, flatter areas you will need less assistance cooling the transmission fluid. If you are towing in hotter, more mountainous areas, you will want greater help cooling the transmission fluid.
If you are looking for a more budget friendly option, as long as you have the room for it, I recommend the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit # D13503. This cooler measures 11 inches wide x 8-3/4 inches tall x 7/8 inches deep. The hardware needed for install comes with the kit. This cooler is a great option for a transmission cooler, it is just simply not as efficient as a stacked plate cooler.
To install a transmission cooler in your 2013 F-150 5.0L engine, you will want to use the Derale Radiator Adapter Fittings For Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury # D13025. These fittings will prevent you from needing to flare lines yourself.
The transmission cooler is sufficient to help your engine during your trip. I have linked two help articles with information on transmission coolers for you.
