The Prodigy # 90885 P2 and the # 90195 P3 are pretty similar in the way they operate. The P3 provides what I consider a more user-friendly display. If there's a fault of some sort in the braking system, either controller will alert you. The P2 would provide an error code describing the problem. You'd need to consult the owner's manual to determine what the code indicates. The P3 would actually display an error message in plain English (or French or Spanish, if you prefer). The P3 also allows you to change the color of the display.
Long story short, if you've used a brake controller before, either controller would work great for you. If you haven't, the P3 is what I'd recommend because of its more user-friendly display.
Once you've chosen a controller, you'll need the # ETBC7 install kit and a functional 4-pole trailer connector (if your Tacoma doesn't have one already) part # 118496. The install kit includes everything needed to install the controller, including the adapter to convert the 4-pole to a 7-way, wire, circuit breakers and all the necessary hardware.
I've linked you to an install video for the 4-pole trailer wiring harness and the Brake Controller Install Kit. I've also linked you to an install video showing a brake controller being installed on a 2008 Tacoma. The procedure shown would be the same on your 2006 model.
