Locking Trunk Mount Bike Carrier for a 2007 Toyota Avalon and 1997 Mercury Mountaineer

Question:

Is there a 2 bike rack that we can use with a 2007 Toyota Avalon and a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer? We would like it to have a lock. I have a Trek Mamba 29er womens bike. My husband has a mountain bike. Also, if there is not a single rack that works for both, can you open the trunk with a trunk mounted rack in place?

There are 2 different 2-bike trunk mount carriers that have locks and that will fit your 2007 Toyota Avalon and 1997 Mercury Mountaineer.

You can use either the Thule Passage, # TH910XT, or the OutWay, # TH45JV.

The OutWay is the top of the line and the best trunk mount carrier I have ever used. The Passage is also a great carrier and is more economical. You can check out videos for both.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance.

You cannot open the trunk or hatch with a trunk mount bike carrier in place. It will affect the fit and the trunk or hatch could fall on you unexpectedly because the hinges are not meant to support additional weight.
