Brake Controller Recommendation for 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Question:

Hi, We purchased a new Casita 17foot RV that we pick up next year. We are towing with a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer with the already installed Tow package and 7 pin hookup. But we were told we should also get a Brake Controller also for the RV and your site was suggested? Can u point us as to the best way to go ? Price options, types are they easy to hookup or do I need to hire someone. Thanks in advance

I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 for your 2008 Mercury Mountaineer. This is a proportional brake controller that offers a customizable, easy-to-read LCD display screen. The brake controller will automatically adjust the trailer's braking based on the deceleration of your Mountaineer. The Prodigy also offers 3 boost levels, performs continuous diagnostic checks, and will level automatically when mounted within a 360 degree vertical range.

Since your vehicle has a factory 7-way trailer connector, you will be able to use the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter # 3035-P to install the Prodigy brake controller. The adapter # 3035-P will plug into the back of the Prodigy at one end, and the other end will plug into a brake controller port.

The # 3035-P instructions indicate that the port on the Mountaineer is located behind the vehicle glove box on the passenger side, or that the harness will be located underneath and left of the steering column and will be taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

Locating the brake controller plug in your Mountaineer will likely be the most difficult part of the installation. Once you've found the plug, the only other steps will be to plug in the wiring adapter and mount the brake controller bracket.

I have attached the installation instructions for both the Prodigy # 90195 and the adapter # 3035-P for you.

Depending on the loaded and ready to tow weight of your Casita travel trailer, you may need a weight distribution system. Some reasons for needing a WD system are if your trailer weight is more than half of the tow vehicle's weight or if the rear of the tow vehicle sags when the trailer is hooked up.

A weight distribution system should be chosen based on your loaded and ready to tow tongue weight. If your tongue weight ends up between 250-400 pounds, I recommend using the Reese Light Duty Weight Distribution System with Sway Controll # 66557. This system requires a hitch ball with a 1 inch diameter shank, like # 63845 with a 2 inch diameter ball or # 63847 with a 2-5/16 inch diameter ball.

I have attached a help article on weight distribution systems and finding trailer tongue weight for you.
