Troubleshooting Trailer-Not-Connected Message on Prodigy P3 Brake Controller in 2013 Ford F-150  

Question:

I have a 2103 F150 with the towing package, I have hooked the Prodigy P3 cable to the wiring harness and I have hooked the boat trailer to the truck and the device says no trailer connected. I have the 7 pin plug setup. The trailer has brake acutuater coupler on it does this have anything to do with it ? This is my first time trying to connect a brake controller so please forgive my stupidity. If I need to take some photos I will have to do that when I get off work. Thank You.

The harness to use to connect a Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 to your 2013 Ford F-150 with the factory 7-way towing package is part # 22292. The harness connects between the controller and the port underneath the dash as shown in the linked video.

The most likely reason for the controller to display N.C. (meaning it does not detect a connected trailer) is a dirty or corroded vehicle or trailer connector. Check the truck's trailer socket and the trailer's plug for any signs of trapped dirt, water or corrosion. Even slight greenish or whitish discoloration can indicate a corrosion problem bad enough to interfere with the connection. Check both the inside and outside of the connectors for corrosion if possible.

Other potential causes for the controller not sensing the trailer are a short on the brake signal wire and a short in the brake magnets themselves. Look for cracks or worn insulation on the brake circuit wire, especially at points where it has to bend around the trailer's frame or where it may contact the frame. This can cause a short. Also check the electric brake assemblies' wiring to ensure one lead is solidly connected to the trailer frame as a ground and that the other is properly connected to the brake circuit wire.

The presence of a surge type actuator-coupler on your trailer should not have any effect on the trailer electrical brake circuit connection. However, if the trailer now has electric brakes on it rather than hydraulic drums the surge coupler should be immobilized by installing a bolt through it from side to side to prevent it from compressing.
