Adding Electric Over Hydraulic Disc Brakes to a 22,000 Pound Trailer

Question:

I have a 22K rated trailer that had vacuum brakes on it and I want to switch it to electric over hydraulic. Has disc brakes on it now. Axles are Kelsey-Hayes. Thanks

For a trailer that is rated for 22,000 pounds I really recommend sticking with the hydraulic disc brakes and a surge coupler. An electric over hydraulic system could work but you would need to mount it close to the braking axles and/or use larger brake line than what we carry. Otherwise you could end up with weak brakes and/or a slow response from the trailer brakes.

On a trailer as heavy as yours I recommend going with a 1600 psi actuator such as # CAR-HBA16-2 which comes with a line kit (though additional brake line could be needed). You will also need a brake controller that is compatible with electric over hydraulic braking systems such as the P2 # 90885.

I have included a link to our help article that covers the parts needed to added electric over hydraulic disc brakes to a trailer. The brakes you already have so you can skip that part.
