Why Aren't Some Hitches Rated for Weight Distribution Systems

Question:

I have a 40 foot motorhome, which I will be pulling a 20 foot trailer with. I will be near maximum weights on both, including total combined weight. I have a 10,000 lb hitch reciever, that has no given equalizer weight rating. Your site information states the following Note: To use a weight-distributing system, your trailer hitch must be rated for use with weight distribution. Check the weight rating label on your hitch to make sure that a weight-distributing capacity is listed. If no rating is listed, a weight-distribution system cannot be used. Can you explain why this apples if none of the weight capacities are exceeded? Thanks

Weight distribution systems put a different kind of torque on the hitch and it's vehicle mounting points than a standard non WD system setup. The force of the spring bars puts almost like a twisting forward type of leverage on the hitch from the bars trying to put the tongue weight up on to the front axles of the vehicle.

What you can do is check with the manufacturer of your motorhome to see if a weight distribution system is recommended. Since it's such a high capacity hitch most likely they will say yes, but we can't recommend you use a WD system unless the manufacturer also says you can.

For more info on WD systems check out the help article I attached.
