The manual brake slider switch on your controller is spring loaded. It should snap back into place when the switch is released. If it doesn't, that means the spring is broken and the controller should be replaced. I'd recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The P2 is easy to use, and is highly rated by our customers.

The LED lamp on the controller should be green with the trailer connected, and should turn red when the brake pedal or manual brake switch is activated with the trailer connected. This indicates that everything's working properly.

I've linked you to the installation instructions/owner's manual for the Voyager Brake Controller.
