Ball Mount, Trailer Hitch, and Trailer Wiring Recommendations for 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

Question:

I want to pull a long sailplane trailer and the height of the hitch is very important because of the 24 length of the trailer. I don't have the option to turn the receiver over to get the hitch lower. Do you have a suggestion?

The Draw-Tite Class II Trailer Hitch Receiver, # 36455, requires the drawbar be used in the rise position.

Another option would be to go with a different hitch and draw bar. I recommend going with a higher capacity hitch with a 2 inch receiver opening. With a 2 inch opening, you will have more gross trailer weight capacity, more tongue weight capacity, and more options for accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers, and you will be able to use a drawbar in the drop position.

I recommend Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75579 and drawbar # 2753. With this hitch you will have 4,000 pounds of gross trailer weight and 400 pounds of tongue weight capacity. The recommended drawbar has a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. I have included a link to the installation details and an installation video for the hitch below.

The important thing to remember when choosing a drawbar is that when the trailer is connected to your 2008 Dodge Caravan, both the van and trailer should be level. I have included an FAQ on choosing the proper drawbar (ball mount) below. The size drawbar you get will determine the size ball you need. The balls for drawbars on 2 inch receivers usually have a 1 inch shank like # 19247. I have included a link to our drawbar main page below.

You might also be interested in adding wiring. The wiring for your van is the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector, # 118552. This unit plugs in line with your taillight wiring and provides a 4-Way trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle. It includes a circuit protected powered converter that requires a direct connection to the battery to protect your vehicles sensitive wiring. I have included the installation details and a video installation below.
