Intermittent S.H and O.L Errors on a Tekonsha Brake Controller in a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500
Question:
I have a 2007 Dodge 2500 Cummins and tow a 24 foot toy hauler with a Tekonsha breaking unit. The breaks have worked fine for several years. On a recent trip the breaks started working intermittently when engaged with the pedal or directly on the breaking units. When they didnt work I noticed an alternating S.H error and a O.L error. I stopped in a truck stop and drove around multiple times and the breaks would fail then work intermittently multiple times. I also noticed some times driving down the road I would intermittently get a S.H error. Any trouble shooting suggestions would be appreciated. The intermittent aspect makes it difficult to work.

The SH means a short and OL means an overload condition. Both of these could be explained by a dirty/corroded trailer connector or faulty wiring or brake magnets. Check the truck and trailer side connectors and make sure they are clean and free of corrosion inside where the wires attach and outside on the pins.
On the trailer side inspect the wiring to the magnets and repair as needed. Make sure the ground wires are attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. You can visually inspect the magnets and if you see the copper windings coming through then the magnets will have to be replaced.
To further test the magnets you can follow the help article I have linked. I have also included some links on testing and troubleshooting brake controllers.
