Troubleshooting Brake Controller Error Codes On 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Question:

To date Ive had two Prodigy P2s installed in my 12 JKU. Each time the unit worked as it should for the first few minutes. After a few minutes of driving with the new install the display would start flashing n.c., .c, S.H. on endless loops with S.H. showing on the display for a longer period of time than the other two codes. Occasionally o.L. showed on the display regardless of the trailer bring hooked up. All of these error codes showed occurred with and without the trailer hooked up. Assuming the unit was defective we installed another unit today. The first few minutes it behaved normally, then before the trailer was ever hooked up the display showed .c and began flashing S.H. nonstop. The wiring was changed for the second install. The 7pin connector is new and was installed at the same time the first P2 was installed. Im not sure this is worth noting, as it is not directly related to braking, but with the first install a rapid, loud clicking noise came over the speakers when I plugged my phone into the aux connector and the power port at the same time. This never occurred before I did have the loud annoying whine and it no longer occurs now that the second P2 has been installed. Any idea as to what the issue can be?

It sounds like you have a short in the blue brake wire somewhere between the brake controller and the 7-way connector at the rear of your Jeep, especially since you said the error codes show up with no trailer connected.

You will want to cut the blue wire about 4 or 5 inches behind the brake controller and see if the flashing SH code stops. If it does, then there is a problem with that wire, and you will need to check it all the way back to the 7-way.

If the code stops flashing on the display, use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and check to make sure the blue wire coming from the back of the brake controller shows current when the brake pedal is pressed.

If it does not stop the flashing, the controller is bad and will need to be replaced. I have attached links to a couple helpful articles you can check out.
