Support Strap for Curt Trailer Hitch for 2015 Forester
Question:
The Curt hitch for a 2015 Forester needs a support strap for non-trailer loads like bike racks, etc. The other two hitches that fit a Forester Draw-tite and Hidden Hitch dont seem to need a support strap. Why not, since all three hitches have a similar design and have identical load ratings?

Helpful Expert Reply:
Curt requires the stabilizing/support strap, # 18050, in order to alleviate the leveraging affect that a non-trailer load places on a hitch. At Curt they like to use the example of carrying a gallon of milk. Think of the strain that would be put on your arm if it is extended opposed to if you carry the milk close to your body. This is what also happens with a hitch when a bike rack or cargo carrier is mounted. Although the hitch itself will support a bike rack or cargo carrier, it puts added strain on the hitch. This is the reason that in order to maintain the warranty, Curt requires that you use the straps to provide additional support.
Curt Trailer Hitches are not of a lesser quality nor are they less strong as Draw-Tite or Hidden Hitch trailer hitches, it's just that the manufacturer is being a bit more cautious. Although Draw-Tite/Hidden Hitch does not require the use of the stabilization strap when carrying hitch mounted accessories, it is a really good idea to use one.
