Fifth Wheel Hitch and Brake Controller Recommendation for 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 5.5 Foot Short Bed
Question:
I have a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 with the short bed 5.5ft. I want to tow a new fifth wheel trailer. What parts do I need? Hitch, rails, wiring? Safety and durability is main concern.

I recommend the M5 Series fifth wheel hitch, part # RP30928, with custom base rail and install kit # RP56007-53 for your 2015 GMC Sierra 1500. The M5 Series features a single-jaw system to ensure a secure closure 360 degrees around the king pin to reduce jarring and chucking. This fifth wheel hitch has a gross towing capacity of 20,000 pounds and a vertical load limit of 5,000 pounds. It is important to remember, however, that regardless of the rating on your hitch, you never want to exceed the capacity of your vehicle. I have attached a review video of this trailer hitch for you.
The Hitch requires the use of a Sidewinder when used with truck beds shorter than 6 feet. This is required to allow the truck and trailer have the necessary clearance to make sharp turns. Sidewinders are specific to manufacturers and pin box model numbers. I have attached a link to all of our Sidewinder options for you. If you send me the pin box manufacturer and model number, I will be glad to make a specific recommendation. The manufacturer and model number will be located on a sticker somewhere on your current king pin.
I recommend the Hopkins Endurance Wiring Harness # 41157 for use with your fifth wheel trailer. This 7-way connector will plug into your vehicle's factory 7-way connector. We have found Hopkins to be a quality, durable brand. I have included an installation video of this wiring harness in a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 for you.
If you also need a brake controller for your vehicle. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195, with the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter # 3016. This brake controller can be mounted within a 360-degree vertical range. The LCD display offers user-friendly roadside diagnostics display. The custom plug-in wiring adapter allows for simple installation of the brake controller in your 2015 Sierra. I have included an installation video of this brake controller in a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado for you.
